Answer
The Member will be aware that I have announced the creation of a Walking and Cycling Champion in my Department with responsibility for spearheading work to deliver infrastructure that give people the freedom and confidence to walk and cycle as part of their everyday routine. I have asked officials to look at what is possible, both in the short term – in terms of social distancing – and in the longer term as we emerge from this coronavirus crisis.
I am keen to work with all Councils and stakeholders in the development of safe active travel routes throughout the North and would encourage Councils to liaise with the Walking and Cycling Champion on suggestions for projects in their local areas.
