Answer

GPs are paid to provide advice and some travel vaccines under the General Medical Services (GMS) Contract as part of the adult vaccinations and immunisations service.

Patients are entitled to be supplied with vaccines by their own GP and not be charged for supply, advice or administration for the following vaccines for the purpose of travel:

Typhoid

Cholera

Polio

Hepatitis A

In addition adults who have not had a full course of some vaccinations usually given in childhood are entitled to vaccination regardless of travel plans.

All other vaccines which fall outside the GMS Contract must be paid for privately. These vaccines include hepatitis B, Japanese encephalitis, meningococcal vaccine, rabies, tick borne encephalitis and yellow fever.

The above contractual obligations are in place across Northern Ireland, irrespective of Trust area.
