Answer

My rationale for the decision in relation to DP 731 Straidhavern Primary School is based on the detailed report given to me by my officials and is as follows:-

“I have carefully read, examined and considered all of the papers and information pertaining to this proposal including all of the objections made. I acknowledge the important and valued role Straidhavern Primary School has played for those children and young people from the local community who attend the school including for those from some military families in the area.

However, it is clear from the evidence provided to me in this report that there are significant sustainability issues and deficiencies at the school; coupled with the fact that there is already sufficient available places in other good schools in the area and against a backdrop of a declining school age population in the area; I believe it would be in the best educational interests of those children and young people at the school that I approve this proposal.

It is important that the Education Authority should ensure that the small number of children remaining, and their parents, are supported through the transition to other schools in the area. Every effort should be made to minimise the disruption to children’s educational experiences and support, care and attention should be given to affected teaching and non-teaching staff who are impacted by the closure.”
